vertical sync capping fps at 50
i recently downgraded my laptop to use windows xp instead of vista. afterwards, i find that vertical sync now caps my fps at 50, instead of 60 like before.
other than the change of operating system and some driver versions, there are no other changes done to my laptop.
specs:
intel core2duo t5450
2gb ddr2 ram
geforce 8400M GS 128mb
so anyone know what's going on? it's not really serious, as i can't tell the difference anyways. but it's good to know.

check the monitor refresh rate hasn't been mucked about with, other than that not much else should affect it.
EDIT:
Make sure you have the laptop version of drivers too, check manufactures site, laptop graphic setups are a bit "non-standard".

I might be stating the obvious and if I am I apologize, but I think vertical sync locks your fps at the highest refresh rate for your monitor. So if it is 50mhz then you will see 50fps. Try unchecking wait for vertical sync in the game options and then check your fps.

Your missing the point completely. He's already stated he knows that, he's saying on his laptop; he was previously using Windows Vista and played GW with Vertical Sync on (purposely, he wants it on..) and was getting 60FPS max (meaning his monitor settings was at 60Hz).
Now, he's re-formatted and downgraded (so he says, it's an upgrade to me ) and has got Vertial Sync on still, and is now getting a cap at 50FPS, as if his laptop changed it's settings from a max refresh rate of 60Hz to 50Hz...
I'd just check your Monitor Settings to see if it has changed and you have all the XP monitor drivers and possibly the graphics drivers and making sure everything is up-to-date would be helpful too.

Check your monitor/display settings for the refresh rate. Might have switched to 50 Hz. But last I checked, monitors don't have a 50Hz option...
I have a question for you, what are the drivers/XP SP you are using, and also, have you tried turning Vsync off? Does that let the frame-rates break 50?

It depends on the monitor/video card combination. You'll get whatever they both support as options. I've never seen a 50hz option, but then it wouldn't surprise me either.

Vertical Sync doesn't necessarily mean that it locks your refresh rate at your screen's rate, it will just fully draw the frame in sync with your monitor refresh rate to eliminate tearing. What might be happening is your screen is set to 75hz, and your video card isn't capable of running at 75fps, so it downgrades to the next step, being 50 fps. Try disabling vsync and see what your frame rate is, or make sure your screen is set to 60hz. Most LCD screens can run at both 60 and 75.
